Stereoscopy is likely to be 'here to stay' because the technology is now affordable and is being incorporated into the latest computer games. This means the current generation of game users are going to grow up with Stereo technology as part of their lives,

The advantages of stereoscopy over standard pictures are

  • 'Larger than life' visuals
  • Amplification of otherwise flat details
  • Captivating effects possible

Longevity of the medium will depend on producers finding ways of exploiting the benefits and techniques of Stereoscopy to bring audiences a better option than standard productions.

Although Daring Digital is still in the early stages of implementation some projects will still take advantage of steresocopy over the standard stillshots.

Stereoscopy involves the creation of one left image and one right image and then masking out the appropriate frame from the corresponding eye. Current popular technology requires glasses to carry out the masking.
  • Anaglyph uses coloured glasses, the images on this page using red blue.
  • Polarized uses two images, one polarised horizontally and one vertically. This is what you see at cinemas.
  • Active Shutter also use clear glasses and 'shut out' the left and right eyes in time with the video. This is what you see on home 3D TV.

The most commonly available technology it the Anaglyph, the glasses are cheap and images can be created on a basic home PC. Unfortunately, the coloured glasses distort the colours of the scene and can be destructive if you are not careful.
